Cambridge 2000: St Andrew's Road: Simoco building
Description: St Andrew's Road: Simoco building |
Date built: 1970s |
Simoco (Systems and Mobile Integrated Communications) was
part of the Philips electronics company and before that
was known as Pye Telecommunications, one of the early
Cambridge hi-tech companies (whose original ancestry can
be traced back to the
Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company).
The site was quite extensive and starting in 2000 it was
re-developed for mostly residential purposes. In particular
the building in the photograph was demolished in the summer
of 2003 to make way for housing. Most of the
new housing
was built on the same part of the site as previous buildings,
but some of it was put on the open space shown in the
photograph. As can be seen, the land here abuts the Cam
and flooded twice in 2001 and once in 2003.
