Cambridge 2000: Newnham College: Newnham Walk: Clough Memorial Gates
A beautiful bronze gate, designed by Champneys and made by
Thomas Elsley. It was badly damaged in 1921 when a group of
male undergraduates tried to smash their way into the college
using a coal trolley after the Senate had voted not to admit
women to membership of the university, and it was repaired by
a fund into which undergraduates of all Cambridge colleges
contributed.
In 2008-2009 it was removed for restoration, and came back
painted black, so more in keeping with the colour of the top
part of the gate, as pictured, rather than the worn, but more
natural, bottom part.
