THE DEFLATE_EG DIRECTORY:

This directory contains example scripts for deflating and reflating
data sets using the "deflate" and "reflate" programs.

DEFLATION:

The "deflate" program reduces the size of a processed .spc file by
retaining only the points with intensity above a certain
threshold value. The threshold intensity can be obtained easily
by using the "plot2" program. This reduced data set takes up
much less memory than the full spectrum and can still be used to
calculate contours on the fly with the "ansig" program.
NB: deflated data sets (.dfl files) cannot at present be read
into the "plot2" program.

To run the script type

	deflate deflate.scr <ret>

To get more help type

	deflate help <ret>

INFLATION:

The "inflate" program restores a deflated data set back to its
original size by assigning zeros to all the data points that are
omitted in the deflated data set because they have intensities
less than the threshold. The spectrum can then be read into
"plot2".
NB: the reflated data set is NOT identical to the original .spc
file because all points with intensity less than the threshold
are set to zero in the .rfl file.

To run the script type

	reflate reflate.scr <ret>

To get more help type

        reflate help <ret>
