Cambridge Snow Photographs: February 2012

Cambridge 2000 snow home page

The 2011-2012 winter in Cambridge was mild until the end of January, when a cold spell arrived. On the night of 4/5 February about 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) of snow fell. It was fairly wet snow and pretty much ideal for snow sculpture. 5 February was fortunately a Sunday so there was no major impact on traffic or work.

Unfortunately many of the colleges were closed to non-members, possibly because of a concern over health and safety (in case someone slipped on one of the paths).

6 February was enough above freezing that about half of the snow melted. But then it got cold again and on the night of 9/10 February another inch or two (3 or 4 cm) of snow fell. It was cold enough that this snow was powdery. People were also becoming fed up with the cold, so for both reasons there was not much in the way of new snow sculpture.

The big thaw started on Monday 13 February, and by the next day most of the snow was gone.
