Access to Cambridge railway station has never been brilliant. In 1950 the authors proposed some changes to improve the access. In particular they proposed a pedestrian bridge with a car park on the other side of the railway line. This would have been eminently sensible. The pedestrian bridge was eventually built in 1989 but unfortunately placed far east of the 1950 proposal and with stupid access to the railway station (via a seedy car park). Equally unfortunately no car park on the other side of the railway line was ever built. Another proposal was to provide better access from Hills Road. This also never happened.
In 2001 the owners of Foster Mill, just about Cambridge's only factory and located right next to the railway station, announced they would eventually vacate the site, allowing re-development of the surrounding area. In 2003 and 2004 proposals were mooted for this re-development and time will tell whether the situation will be improved.
