In 2003 the chattering classes worked themselves into a great tizzy over the addition of an open air skateboard area in Jesus Green (fortunately they were ignored). So what the chattering classes in 1950 would have made of this proposal to build a new road along the edge of Jesus Green can only be imagined.
The main purpose of the road would have been to service a new multi-storey car park on Park Street, which itself was eventually built in 1963. Needless to say the spine road was never built. As a result access to the car park for many years was via the narrow roads of Magdalene Street and Bridge Street. In 1997 the local government closed this route to cars (except for taxis, of course, since rich people are exempted from rules which apply to everyone else in Cambridge). So the only current access to the car park for much of its intended audience is via a particularly tortuous route via Victoria Avenue. This has made the car park rather useless, so much so that the council is now using some of it for cycles. (This must be one of the most expensive cycle sheds in the world.)
