Cambridge 2000: university: Trumpington Street: Judge Institute
Old Addenbrooke's Hospital lay empty for many years while the
university decided what to do with it. In the re-development
the planners insisted that the façade had to
be kept largely intact, but the architect decided, and was
allowed, to use
bright colours,
and this makes it one of
the more interesting buildings in Cambridge, but whether it
will stand the test of time is not yet clear. Even the
back side
is elaborately designed and coloured.
The Judge Institute is the business school for the university,
it is relatively new but because of the hi-tech industry
is prominent locally.
In 2015-2017 a
more conventional building
was added at the back (on Tennis Court Road).
