Robert Sayle is the best department store in the city and in 2000 occupied several buildings, this being the main one. Robert Sayle moved onto the site in 1840 and there have been massive changes in both the interior and exterior of the rambling buildings over the years, both in the 19th and 20th centuries. The site was re-developed yet again as a new shopping mall known as the Grand Arcade, and the buildings behind were demolished in early 2005, although the frontage was saved.

The left part of the façade probably dates from 1876 and the larger middle section of the façade probably dates from 1905.

Robert Sayle moved to temporary premises on Burleigh Street in September 2004 in preparation for the re-development.

On 8 November 2007, Robert Sayle opened up in their new premises, renamed as the parent company, John Lewis.

On 27 March 2008, the rest of the Grand Arcade opened up.
