Physics was the first large department to move out to west Cambridge, and for many years remained in isolation from most of the rest of the university. That changed in 2001 with the opening of a new computing science building.

The whole of the physics complex was unfortunately built in the same common dreary style as seen here. This was one of six connected 1970s buildings occupied by the department.

The department vacated these buildings and moved to a nearby site in 2024-2025, informally called Cavendish III.

As a result, the university plans on demolishing the six 1970s buildings in 2026-2027.
