Cambridge 2000: Newmarket Road: Cambridge United football ground, Abbey Stadium
| Description: Newmarket Road: Cambridge United football ground, Abbey Stadium: north stand |
This illustrates football as it existed in most stadia in England
until recently, with no seats in the stand.
This means that more fans can be packed
in, providing a more exciting atmosphere.
Concerns for safety have led to the introduction of seats
in many grounds, including in the
east stand.
In November 2003 the club asked for planning permission to
re-develop part of the site in order to provide a one-off
financial boost. This would include the demolition and
rebuilding of the north stand, as well as some housing and
a hotel. This did not happen.
At the end of the 2004/2005 football season Cambridge United
was relegated from the Football League and went into
administration. In 2014 they made it back into the Football
League.
