Cambridge 2000: Coldham's Lane: Sainsbury's food store
Description: Coldham's Lane: Sainsbury's food store |
Date built: 2000 |
This is the oldest large supermarket in the city. It opened
in December 1974 and it was built to cater for families with
cars, a new concept for England at the time. Some people
opposed this development but many people welcomed it,
and on opening day there were long queues. It became the
first Sainsbury's store to take one million pounds in a
single week.
The store received a facelift in 2000, with the almost
mandatory glass panels dressing up what is otherwise a drab
building.
