The Amateur Dramatic Club, the country's oldest university playhouse, was founded in 1854, moving to the present location in 1860. The theatre building itself, located behind, was destroyed in a fire in 1933 and the current theatre, designed by Harold Tomlinson and W.P. Dyson, opened in 1935.
The façade was modernised in the summer of 2004.
