Cambridge 2000: Mill Road: Bharat Bhavan (was Mill Road Library)
Description: Mill Road: Bharat Bhavan (was Mill Road Library) |
Date built: 1892 |
Architect: Frank Waters |
This was a typically grand Victorian library. In 1996, the county
council closed it down, to save money. The council then provided
a lease on the property to
an organisation known as Bharat Bhavan, which means House of India,
and the building served as a Hindu shrine and community centre,
until the lease was terminated in 2019.
The council then did a major refurbishment of the building and in 2022
offered it for sale or lease.
The white boards along the top in the photo hid what were originally windows
that provided natural light into the library. These boards were removed
as part of the refurbishment.
