Cambridge 2000: university: Botanic Garden: Sainsbury Laboratory

The Sainsbury Laboratory is part of the university Plant Sciences department and is devoted to research into plant development. It contains the University Herbarium, a collection of over a million plant specimens from around the world, including those collected by Darwin during his voyage on the Beagle.

In addition to this research role, the building also houses a seminar room and café for the Botanic Garden, which is in the low-rise wing, called the Gilmour Suite, visible at the left of the photo. This was opened in February 2011. The previous garden café was in the Gilmour Building, which was demolished to make way for the Sainsbury Laboratory.

There are forty etchings by Norman Ackroyd with theme the Galapagos, located on the terrace on the exterior café wall to the right of the entrance.

The building just visible at the far right is the Plant Growth Facility.

The Sainsbury Laboratory was awarded the 2012 RIBA Stirling Prize.
