Cambridge 2000: university: Charles Babbage Road: Sports Centre
The sports facilities at the university have been lacking
and this is the first of a planned for three buildings to
help close the gap. This contains a large hall as well
as some smaller rooms. Unfortunately there is no swimming
pool until the third building comes along.
It would have made more sense to place this adjacent to the
athletic centre
on Wilberforce Road
but that was not possible. The university was lucky that
the Coton foot and cycle path does a zig zag around the
field where the Sports Centre is located, otherwise the
city might not have allowed it to be placed here either.
Ove Arup was the structural engineer for the Sydney Opera
House and the Sports Centre roof has a vague hint in that
direction.
