Cambridge 2000: Gwydir Street: David Parr House, 186
On the outside the house is nothing special, and
indeed looks like a typical terrace house in the
area. However, on the inside the house is an
amazing snapshot of Arts and Crafts decoration.
David Parr bought the house in 1886. He worked for
F R Leach & Sons, an important Arts and
Crafts decorating company based in Cambridge.
In his spare time he decorated the house in a
similar style to what he would have carried out
at work, decorating a church or college dining hall.
David died in 1927 and then his granddaughter,
Elsie Palmer, aged 12, moved in to look after
her grandmother Mary Jane, David's wife.
Elsie lived in the house until 2012, and during
that time few changes were made to the interior.
A charitable organisation bought the house in
2013 with the aim of preserving the Parr interior.
