This is the second train station in Cambridge, opening over 170 years after the main train station. In the usual way, Cambridge North opened a year or two late. It is located on land which was previously the site of the Chesterton sidings.

The façade illustrates a rotated and slightly distorted version of Wolfram's cellular autonomy rule 30.

Although this is supposed to serve north Cambridge, the access to the station is poor and the timetable is poor, and so for most people in north Cambridge, it is still better to use the the main railway station.

But London commuters will start to take over the area near the station, something which local politicians completely failed to understand would be a consequence of opening the new station.

A spur of the guided busway was added to connect to the station, which means that London commuters also have an incentive to live in villages along the guided bus route.

The station opened on Sunday 21 May 2017.
