Cambridge 2000: university: Northampton Street: Kettle's Yard
Kettle's Yard contains one of the few art museums in Cambridge,
and it has both permanent and temporary exhibitions.
The owner, Jim Ede, constructed the original house and gallery
out of four derelict Georgian cottages. He presented the house
and his art collection to the university in 1966, but still lived
here until 1973.
There have been several additions over the years. In 1969-1970
Leslie Martin with David Owers added a
large extension.
The same firm added further smaller extensions in 1980 and 1984.
In 1994, Bland, Brown and Cole added a
further extension
at the front, on Castle Street.
In 2016-2018 (but many more years in the planning), a
further extension
was added, designed by Jamie Fobert.
This was also located on Castle Street, modifying and to the south
of the Bland, Brown and Cole extension.
