Cambridge 2000: Conduit Head Road: Shawms
Not the most beautiful of houses, but representative of the
modernist style fashionable at the time.
The large south-facing windows help, but the best
feature is the roof which has a small room with the rest
largely laid with paving, a brilliant place for a party on a warm
evening.
The original owners lived in the house for almost
60 years, and hardly anything was changed either internally or
externally during that time,
so when they died the local government planning office
decided to make it Grade II* listed. This places severe restrictions
on what can be done with the property, and in fact made the entire
property almost worth less than the value of the land by itself.
