Cambridge 2000: university: Senate House Hill
This is a bronze copy of a second century marble Roman urn once
owned by Hadrian and currently located in the Burrell Collection in
Glasgow, with another copy at Warwick Castle. This copy was given
to the university in 1842 by the then chancellor (titular head
of the university)
Hugh the 3rd Duke of Northumberland. The stone base was added in
1936, with the inscription cut by
Eric Gill.
This lies in the middle of the court in front of the
Senate House
and can only be seen up close on graduation days when people
are allowed onto the lawn.
