Cambridge 2000: Gonville and Caius College: West Road: Stephen Hawking Building, 5
This new accommodation block replaced a
Victorian villa.
It is slightly S-shaped (sigmoidal) because some of the trees
on the site, including a Redwood (Sequoia) on the other
side of the building, have preservation orders. This no doubt
added to the cost but also makes the building more interesting.
At the rear of the building is a new conference centre. A
Porters' Lodge (whose roof is just visible at the left in the
photo) was also added on the site.
